Earth Day, Every Day
by greenspacewriter 04/24/2012Participation has been a key theme in GreenspaceNYC’s initiatives and the sustainability movement as a whole. Earth Day 2012 was no exception.
It goes without saying that green events require active members of society that work together to promote environmentally friendly practices. While GreenspaceNYC has a clear focus on the New York City community, the Earth Day Network has made their annual event an international affair.
The organization’s site reported that approximately one billion people took part in Earth Day events this past Sunday across 192 countries. The Earth Day Network has also posted photos of the various activities held on April 22nd worldwide, which you can view at http://www.earthday.org/.
Consider the influence that this one day has each year in terms of reducing the impact that human beings have on the environment. Now imagine a world in which sustainable practices are part of every day life. The rate at which mankind damages the planet would see an impressive and substantial decrease. There truly is power in numbers and Earth Day is a clear reminder of what the world is capable of when people come together for a common cause.
Of course, Earth Day is a fairly simple commitment - after all, it is only one day out of 365. While this annual ritual is of extreme value for environmental preservation and awareness, it has come to a point where acknowledging the significance of a healthy Earth needs to be a daily practice. Now is the time to target local communities and mobilize progress towards cleaner, greener living all year long.
